riverrmap asked: Hey so, how does Cass Cain speak? I'm only vaugely familiar with her story but I know she was raised without any spoken language? My understanding is that she either choose to not speak or struggles with it. How is that different from broken English? And hey if you've got any recs for her story I'd be down for that. Thanks! (Sorry if this is annoying..)
she initially struggles with verbal communication, yes, due to her being raised only learning how to read body language to make her a more effective fighter. but after she runs into a meta human, who basically rearranges her brain/way of thinking, she is able to understand spoken english.
(batgirl vol. 1 #4, 2000)
as you can see, even immediately after this encounter, she does not speak broken english, which would be something more along the lines of “me love you long time”; her diction and grammar are not wrong, and even sometimes overly proper in other comics. and there are other comics where she mimics things she’s heard on tv, picking up colloquialisms. having her speak in broken english is not only just not canon, but it also plays into racist stereotypes. there are a handful of other people who have said basically the same thing with some other examples of her speaking such as here and here.
anyways, i am part of casscaindaily, and i made a reading guide for cassandra which you can find here. the first volume of batgirl is one of my favourite series of all time, and i’d really recommend reading it.
it’s super late but I finally found time to finish my Hanukkah Hal drawing! Finding out my favorite DC superhero was half Jewish meant a lot to me, anyways I waned to draw him in an ugly Hanukkah sweater!
